About this tool
India's Goods and Services Tax applies at four main slabs — 5, 12, 18 and 28 percent — and the arithmetic runs in two directions depending on what you are given. Adding GST to a base price is straightforward multiplication. Removing it from a tax-inclusive figure is where people go wrong, because you cannot simply subtract the percentage; an 18 percent inclusive total must be divided by 1.18 to recover the base. Get that backwards and your invoice will not reconcile. For sales within a single state the tax splits evenly into central GST and state GST, so an 18 percent charge appears as 9 percent CGST plus 9 percent SGST on the invoice. This calculator handles both directions and shows the split ready to copy onto a bill.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I remove GST from an inclusive amount?
+
Divide the total by one plus the rate. For 18 percent, divide by 1.18 — subtracting 18 percent gives the wrong answer.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?
+
Intra-state sales split the tax into CGST and SGST equally. Inter-state sales use a single IGST charge at the full rate.
Which slab applies to my product?
+
That depends on the HSN or SAC classification of the goods or services. Check the official rate schedule or ask your accountant.
