About this tool

Character limits are everywhere and they are unforgiving. An SMS is 160 characters before it splits and bills twice. A meta description gets cut off in search results past roughly 155. Instagram bios stop at 150, page titles at around 60, and plenty of internal systems have their own arbitrary caps on names, references and comment fields. Counting by eye is impossible and counting in a spreadsheet is awkward, so a live counter is the fastest way to fit copy into a space that will not stretch. This one updates as you type, separates characters with and without spaces, and lets you set your own limit so you can see at a glance how much room is left. Everything is calculated locally in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which count should I use for SMS?

+

Use characters including spaces. A standard SMS holds 160 of them before it splits into multiple messages.

Do emoji count as one character?

+

Many emoji are stored as more than one unit internally, which is why some systems count them as two. The counter shows the practical character count.

Can I count line breaks?

+

Line breaks are counted as characters, matching how most form fields and messaging systems measure length.
